Tchotchke (pronounced CHACH-kee) are small toys, gewgaws, knickknacks, baubles, trinkets, or kitsch. The term has a connotation of worthlessness or disposability, as well as tackiness.
Ok, I must admit… I have referred to these in this blog before as knickknacks because I had ABSOLUTELY no idea how to spell the word, but having grown up referring to (and collecting) these babies… it was time I learned!
And I have to disagree with the Wikipedia definition above, because Tchotchkes are not necessarily worthless. If done right, they can ROCK! I love a good (and unique) collection of items, to fill up a bookshelf, mantle or creative wall hanging piece like this. They can really add a personal touch to a room, and oftentimes be a great conversation piece! My late Nanna and Poppop were the kings of the tchotchke display. I’m sure like many of your grandparents too – they had a real knack for collecting.
So whether it’s a collection from childhood, a tradition when you travel, or a gift – embrace the Tchotchke!!!
