Good times in the Bathroom

20 Mar

Remember when I posted about our upstairs bathroom conundrum?
Well I hope I kept you on the edge of your seat…

Here is a refresher with what we started with…

The deal:

Our upstairs full bathroom is quite dated to say the least.  I’m not even sure what color you would call the yellow room… somewhere between mustard and really ripe banana (yummy combo).  But unfortunately bathroom renos are quite expensive, and not high on our spending priority list.  So to hold us over until we win the lottery or yellow tile comes back in style (whichever comes first) I needed to do my best with some fun decor.

Now am I just trying to distract visitors from the color with some really cool accessories?  You betcha!!!

The Stuff:

So after a little bit of shopping, here’s the update!

Paint color: Behr Gentle Rain

Shower curtain from Urban Outfitters

Various brown weave baskets from TJMaxx for storage (reused from apartment)
Hand woven Turkish hand towels from Etsy.

Wall hanging towel holder from Iron Accents (reused from apartment)

Bell jar soap dispenser (resused from apartment)

The one built-in in the entire house!  This is a tribute to our old place 🙂

Ok, so not the most dramatic before and after photo shoot (and sorry for the poor photos… the lighting is horrible in there).  However this was a truly cheap project (under $65) that was a lot of fun to do!

Short term plans:

Replace the toilet (white please!)

Replace the sink (something with storage underneath)

Replace the mirror/light fixture with something (ANYTHING) else!

Long term plans:

Bathroom gut, expand, and total overhaul.

{So how have YOU spruced up your bathroom on the cheap?}

Let’s get creative

5 Mar

What do you do when you’re stuck with bathroom colors from the 1970s (helloooo yellow!) but can’t afford a major update?

Get creative with decor, that’s what!

My plans for our upstairs bathroom…

Upstairs Bathroom
I’m pretty excited about this…
Excited about a bathroom? Yes sir.
Do I need to get out more?  Probably…

{Anyone else have some creative and inexpensive ways to spruce up a dated room?}

Teach me Tuesday: Code Flags

7 Jun

Morning friends!

Just taking a quick detour from our Outside Pride journey to squeeze in a little “teach me tuesday” this week.

So todays post is not really a “design” teaching moment…but hear me out 🙂

The International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPSCode is an amendment to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention (1974/1988) on minimum security arrangements for shipsports and government agencies. Having come into force in 2004, it prescribes responsibilities to governments, shipping companies, shipboard personnel, and port/facility personnel to “detect security threats and take preventative measures against security incidents affecting ships or port facilities used in international trade.”

Yes, I know this is VERY important information here – but why on earth am I writing about it on a blog dedicated to home decor?

Oh I’m so glad you asked!

So I was looking for a fun bus scroll to hang in our apartment, and turned to (where else) Etsy for ideas.  Am I too predicable?  Well I love the bus scroll trend right now…

…but wanted something a little more off beat for our home.  Well after some hard core searching I came across this fabulous Etsy shop based out of Sydney, Australia called Bexpert, and I fell in love!  This very creative lady turned the International Security Code Flags (see above if you got bored and skipped over the wordy wiki definition) into some pretty funky artwork!

Brilliant, huh??  And for only $15 a piece, I had to have 2!  One J and one T.  I’ll let you smarties guess why….

Now I debated where to put them, and I kept coming back to the bathroom.  Was it because there is an abundance of water in there? Or because the very small space kinda makes you feel like you’re in a ship’s bunker?  I’ll never know the reason for the calling… however I absolutely LOVE them there!

Check it out!

The shop also sells antique versions of the flag, as well as some cute prints:

And my final plug… the seller Beck Williams was super nice, got back to me with answers to my questions right away, and the shipping was really fast – even coming from the other side of the world!!  Two thumbs up from this girl!

{All Aboard!}

Beachy Bathroom!

17 Mar

Thanks Lizzy for the request!  Here are just a few ways to add a beachy feel to your bathroom, without going overboard on the nautical look.

  • Colors: Whites & blues, and add a little red or coral to mix it up!
  • Accessories:  Keep the beach themed accessories simple.  You don’t want to overdo it and look like a ship captain. Use shells, but display them in a more modern glass jar…. Or find an understated star fish piece that’s more eclectic than tourist shoppy!
  • Pattersn:  Strips and clean lines work well.

And just a few inspirational pieces to get you started…. Beach Bathroom
